How To Dress For Work Without Losing Style

How to Dress for Work without Losing Style

In case you didn't know this already, I have a full-time job outside of blogging. I was shocked to find out that many people are surprised that I am not a full-time blogger! I think the confusion is that fortunately, I do have the option to work from home. There are people in my team that work from home all the time since they live in places such as California (our home office is in Chicago). So definitely grateful that working remotely is possible. It definitely made it much easier during my chemo days.

My Work Dress Code

On days I am in the office, I do like to dress up a bit. Not sure if your workplace is similar to mine, but they are pretty laid-back with what we can wear. There's no business casual dress code. Phew! Seriously, the culture has changed so much since I graduated from college. I remember my first and second jobs when we had to buy work pants to wear to work! Anyways, my current work lets us wear whatever we want within reason of course. Ya know, do not show up in short shorts or a cropped top that shows your midriff. I do like to keep it classy but with more of my personal style. For me, my workwear style is a balance of looking professional without losing style.

I get asked if I wear a lot of the stuff on the blog in real life and the answer is yes! I don't like wasting my money on clothes and I want to make the most of what I buy. With that said, I like to make sure my workwear outfits don't lose my personal style.

During the summer months, I have asked my co-workers to take a snap of an outfit whenever we head out for a break. I've received a lot of great feedback about my workwear style. Thank you all so much! I have been sharing it via Instagram with the hashtag #RDatWork. When the weather gets colder, I can't promise you all I can continue this. But I'll do my best! Maybe I'll resort to mirror selfies - we shall see.

Tips On Dressing For Work Without Losing Personal Style.

Like I said, I love showing my personal style when I dress for work but still want to be taken seriously and dress appropriately. It is also a great way to wear pieces that are already in your closet. Below are my tips on dressing for work without losing style.

1. Wear Knee-Length Clothes

If you decide to wear a dress or skirt, don't wear one that is above the knee. Anything shorter than that just looks like too much skin is exposed. I highly recommend wearing midi lengths. They're flattering and there are so many options! Plus, they can easily be worn during the Fall with a light cardigan or blazer.

2. Dress In Layers

Layering makes such a difference especially if you think the top may not be appropriate. I have strapless tops that I love to wear, but I honestly don't think strapless tops are appropriate. So in order to wear them to work, I layer it with a cardigan or a blazer. It immediately transforms an outfit. Or it can easily dress up just a classic tee.

3. Keep The Heel Height Low

When it comes to wearing heels to work, I don't like to wear more than 2"-2.5". Anything higher than that height gives it a 'going out' appearance. Plus, you will be comfortable all day. My favorite are these kitty heels. They look chic and comfortable. I just recommend sizing up! If heels aren't your thing, go for flats. I think a pointed toe flat immediately creates a workwear chic look.

4. Add Color & Prints

Adding pops of color or printed pieces is a great way to elevate your workwear style. A basic blush button down shirt looks like it has a lot more flare and style than a basic black button down shirt. Even though they look identical, adding that color makes a difference. Or change up your shoe color. I love to wear red heels with a classic outfit to work.

5. Add Textures

Another way to elevate a classic workwear outfit is playing with textures. My favorite texture is ruffles! Ruffles are all the rage lately and it is a great way to be fashion forward with your work clothes. I am loving this ruffled white shirt!

How do you guys dress for work? I love hearing your thoughts! I'm all about making my workwear outfits fun!
