No matter where you live, it is unfortunate that women (especially when alone) are more prone to be attacked or sexually assaulted. In a larger city, the statistics of these attacks only gets higher. It is unfortunate that I live in one of the cities with the most crimes. I was unfortunately a victim. You may think it occurred when it was dark out and in a less populated area. However, I was walking alone in broad daylight in a touristy area. I was in a total panic and felt truly blessed to get out of that situation before anything became worse. During that time, I wished I had something with me that could alert someone I needed help. I wished during those moments I had Tre beside me.

Nowadays, I am more careful and more hesitant to be alone, especially at night. Whenever I am working later than usual in the office, I cab it just to be sure. Recently (and luckily), I was introduced to an app called Watch Over Me.  Watch Over Me is an app to help women feel much more safe on the street. They basically give women the tools they need to live their life fully. This app has so many cool features. They were recently highlighted in Chicago Defender.

First feature is the ‘Watch Over Me’. If for some reason you feel unsafe, you click on ‘Watch Over Me’ and the app will ask how long you would like to be watched for. You would input the timeframe, and the app will track your location. When the time is up and you have not tapped “I’m Safe”, the app will alert your loved ones. This app works in every U.S. city, as well as Asian and European countries.

Another feature is the ‘My Contacts’. In this section, you will add the contacts of anyone you would consider contacting if you need any help. These individuals will be part of your Safety Network and Watch Over Me will contact these individuals when it appears you are in danger.

One of the newest features is the ‘Safer Streets’. I love this feature! This feature is first being piloted in Chicago. For all you Chicagoan ladies, it is so worth checking out. When you tap into this feature, it will locate where you are and will let you know the status of the area. For instance, if the area you are in happens to have high crimes, then the status will display ‘Low’. As you can see, due to the large population of people and variety of individuals at Millennium Park, the status had low safety (thank goodness Tre was with me!) Currently in my home, the status displays ‘Moderately Safe’. I think this feature is great because there are times when I would be in part of the city I am unsure of and understanding how safe I am would be helpful before roaming around.

The app will also work as a guardian angel and will alert you via pop up notification that you may be entering a high crime area.

You can also upgrade the app to a premium. The premium will send out emergency alerts regardless of your safety network’s internet connection. Watch Over Me will automatically send text messages to your safety network even if they’re offline. You also don’t have to pay for these texts even if you’re roaming overseas! You can upgrade to this special feature, ‘Total Safety’, for a low cost of $4.99 a year. Yes people, it only takes $5 a year to feel a lot safer. I’m sure a lot of our parents will appreciate this, especially when traveling abroad! Not only does Watch Over Me want to focus on empowering women, but they are generous enough to giveaway the premium Watch Over Me app to 5 lucky ladies!     That is terrifying and I'm so glad you are ok! I think spreading the word is amazing and what a great app! The area I work is getting horrible and I'm very fortunate we all leave the building together. So happy I live in a safe area.

    Sadly, I have also been a victim of crime and all 3 times were during the day. This app is so cool, and I have never heard of it before. It sounds like a fantastic idea. I will have to check it out and let you know what I think. By the way, I am loving your hair. That braid is so cute.

    First off, I am so loving your new haircut! You look beautiful and the braid just perfect Summer look! I've also been using this app for that added security and think it's so beneficial!     First of all I love Chicago, and your photos especially the sunglasses however there is a deeper meaning to this post that I think most people are missing. I am sorry to hear that you were the victim of an attack, that is horrible and scary and I am glad you are OK. I am moving to NYC shortly and will definitely download this app, it is extremely necessary because the reality of being a female walking alone (at any point) you are more likely be attacked then men, and less likely able to defend yourself. I appreciate this post a lot thank you for this VERY NECESSARY content.

    Wow, I'm sorry to hear that you were involved in an attack. That must have been one of the most terrifying experiences of your life.

    This sounds like a really, really useful app for basically all of us. I guess it's not out in Canada just yet, but if they make it available, I will 10000% download it.
