Airplane Travel Skincare Routine
Why Airplane Travel Skincare Routine Is Important
Last month during my flight to LA, I quickly shared my airplane travel skincare routine on my InstaStory. So I figured, why not share it again on the blog in case anybody missed it. Without a doubt I think it is so important to take care of your skin when you are traveling by plane. This is when your skin needs the extra attention.
There are 2 reasons why taking care of your skin and prepping it for take off is important.
- Planes are full of germs. The germs in airplane cabins are sooo bad. It is just full of bacteria and when your skin is exposed to this, it freak outs.
- Your skin will dry out. Being in the air, it lacks moisture and your skin needs moisture. The moisture acts like a barrier to protect your skin and of course when it is dry, it leads to skin issues. For me, my skin breaks out!
How I Discovered This
I discovered that airplane travel skincare was important when I used to travel a lot for work. As soon as the plane landed and I walked on the jetway, my skin would feel so dry. Sometimes, it felt crackly dry, which is very uncomfortable. Then of course, I would look in the airport bathroom mirror (I always have to go as soon as we land, does that happen to you?!) and I would see the most unwanted red dots on my face. UGH! And it never failed, this happened EVERY TIME.
I finally was fed up with how awful my skin would be after traveling, that I did some research. And that’s when I found out all that information I mentioned above. From then on, a good airplane travel skincare routine was a must!
As a disclaimer, this routine is primarily focused on domestic flights (or shorter plane flights). For longer flights, it is a similar routine but with some added products. I will go over that in another post. So without further ado, these are the products I use to have a good airplane travel skincare routine.
Skincare Products
Face Wipes
Removing your makeup is so important. Makeup holds onto dirt and environmental stressors. So not only will you be retaining the plane’s germs, but it also leads to free radicals (wrinkles & fine lines). I usually don’t wear makeup when I know I will be flying on a plane, but if you are coming from somewhere important (like for me it would be a work meeting), then the face wipes are so convenient to have in order to remove makeup. I love these face wipes because they are so gentle yet very effective and delivers hydration. Most face wipes create that burning sensation on my face. This one doesn’t. It probably doesn’t because it is toxic-free. It is also biodegradable. I always love it when a product is eco-friendly.
Thayers Rose Petal Face Mist
This travel size face mist is a great way to add hydration to your face throughout your plane ride. Whenever you are feeling like your face is tightening up and it is getting dryer, just spray this on. I specifically like the this face mist because it contains witch hazel which is known to be reduce inflammation and fight bacteria. So if your face is thinking about breaking out, this mist will at least try to calm the redness and balance the skin.
Balancing Face Oil
I love this face oil and I use it on a daily basis. If you don’t use one, I highly encourage you to. It is life changing for your skin so you bet I had to include this as part of my airplane skincare. It adds an extra layer of hydration to your face and adds nutrients that your skin needs. I specifically use the balancing face oil for the same reason I use the balancing face mist. This oil will help protect my skin from potential breakouts.
Atmosphere Protection Cream
What would I do without this moisturizer! This moisturizer protects your skin from environmental stressors (such as dry climate, pollution, and wind). I started using this because living in the city, it is inevitable that the air is full of pollution and pollution is not good for your skin. So without a doubt, I can’t step outside the house without this moisturizer. I was also told it works great as a skin protection barrier on the plane.
Eye Cream
The area around your eyes needs some love too. A good eye cream will reduce the puffiness, hydrate, reduce fine lines, and brighten the eye area. This Countermatch eye cream is amazing and it does that! I feel like my eyes look more awake and bright. And let’s be real, most flights are at the most inconvenient times. So when I land, I want to look like I’m Beyonce (or as close as possible haha) and not the tired, dehydrated-looking face.
Lip Conditioner
This lip balm is seriously the holy grail! I’m sure you all are sick of me talking about it on Instagram over and over again but it is the best thing ever! This is the only lip balm I know that really works. It feels so good on your lips. And I honestly think it makes my lips look better. But anyways, besides this being amazing, a good lip balm is needed because your lips will get just as dry as your skin.
Screen Cleansing Towelette
Since the airplane is crawling with germs, I wipe everything down. Obviously the first thing I wipe down is my phone screen and then the arm rest and tray. I love using these cleansing towelettes, because they don’t take up much space. It is small and compact. Although it specifically says it’s for electronics, it can also be used to sanitize your surroundings.
Last but not least, drinking lots of water is extremely beneficial as well. It will keep you hydrated from the dry air and helps you maintain your skin’s glow.
Hope this is helpful!

Great tips and definietely the way forward but I have to admit that skin routine is the last thing for me to think about when I’m on the plane. I just watch films or sleep haha 💖💞😘
http://www.elegantduchess.com
Haha yes I can see that! Some of these, I do it before I get on!
Haha I think that too! I just noticed how awful my skin is right when I got off the plane. A lot of this, I do before I go on the plane.
I think wipes and cream are most essentials

I learned the hard way haha!
taking care of my skin is so important to me when I travel. I always use a sheet mask or the origins overnight mask as well as a very rich lip balm and facial oil.

Oo yes!! I have yet to try using a sheet mask on the plane!
I really need to step up my airplane skin routine because man, oh man, does my skin ever hate me after a flight! I’m now dying to try all of these products, especially that face oil.
Right?! The skin does not like to fly haha!

You’re welcome Kelsey!
I have sensitive skin, my face would always get pathetically dull after travelling! I started with wiping my face even if I didn’t wear makeup, then would moisturize and apply sunscreen. But I guess I am still lacking in my flight skincare game, I need to lookout for these facial oil & mist! Thanks for sharing this great routine!
Wishing you an amazing weekend! 🙂

Thank you Samantha! Definitely having a great time!
I use pretty much all of this (although different brands) when I travel because plane rides are one of the easiest ways to get sick, and I suffer from dry skin so planes dry me out even more. I might want to get my hands on that atmosphere protection cream though.
Glad to hear I am not the only one taking care of my skin on the plane! And yesss it is so gross and dry! Definitely recommend the atmosphere protection cream!
These are all such great tips! I personally love packing a sheet mask into my carry-on for flights. The airplane oxygen is so drying that the mask with all of its hydrating properties really help!
I am definitely going to try that out deborah!!
This is such a helpful post! I always struggle with breakouts and dry skin when I travel by plane, so I definitely will keep these ideas in mind. Thanks for sharing!

It is due to the dry air from the high altitude that causes all these changes. Glad I can help!

You’re welcome Cristina!
I always love reading about others’ skincare routine, especially related to travel since I get hormonal breakouts and have such fickle dehydrated skin. My skin always used to get oily and crackly too and I’ve started using facial oils and always have wipes, but I like to change it up pretty often and these products sound so nice. I’ll have to keep my eye out when I come across these! Thanks for sharing!!

I’m going on holiday soon so this was extremely helpful! I’ve never heard of atmosphere protection cream, that sounds really cool and I agree it’s important to wipe everything clean especially your phone as you touch that the most!

Oh nice! haha I was going to be writing a travel beauty guide too soon! It’s always hard packing for travels cause you don’t want to bring too much and everything needs to be under 100ml when you want to only travel with a carry on.

I am so with you! It is hard to keep it under 100ml, especially if you want to keep your skin in good condition while traveling! Looking forward to reading your post!

Such great tips! I’ve started to travel with rose water spray for long flights and I’ve learned to drink lots of water. I also bring my own food, there is so much sodium in airplane food that can cause you to break out as well
https://dreamofadventures.com/
Oh yes definitely lots of sodium in the food!! That is so good to note!
Such an interesting post! I need that face mist ♥

Pose & Repeat
I think the problem with flying is mostly that the air in the cabin is very dry (hence your skin gets dry as well). When I fly I drink a lot of water to simply keep my body hydrated. It can be a problem sometimes (those toilets on planes are terrible). When I travel I use the same cosmetics as normally, so I think I should take your advice and buy some special cosmetics for the travelling time.
Dorota
That is exactly the problem! Hope some of my tips help!
Nice routine 🙂
Thank you!
