How to Dress Up A Flannel Shirt

Guess what comes out of my closet now that it is Fall?! I bet you probably did the same thing. That’s right Fall is basically flannel shirt and/or plaid shirt season. Most people wear flannel casually, but I’ve found some cute ways to dress it up. So if you are in a fashion funk or just want to switch things up, I hope my tips and outfit ideas help you out!

How To Dress Up A Flannel Shirt

Choose Color And Pattern Wisely

You want to make sure your shirt is versatile so that it doesn’t restrict what you can wear with it. I recommend choosing colors that are more neutral. I recommend avoiding any pattern that has hot pink or purple in it. Those colors can be limiting and hard to accessorize with.

Wear Oversized Flannel

I’m a fan of buying plaid shirts that have that boyfriend fit. It has a relaxed vibe, but at the same time the flowiness of the shirt adds an extra level of chicness. Plus, the boyfriend fit is more versatile. You can do a lot with it versus a more fitted flannel shirt.

Tuck In

I’m a big fan of tucked in shirts or doing the front tuck. It helps keep the outfit looking crisp and less casual.

Pair It With High Waisted Skinny Jeans

The higher the waist, the better right? I pretty much only wear high waisted pants. When it is high-waisted, your flannel shirt looks really great tucked in too. Skinny jeans are also much easier to dress up with and pair well with heels. A big fashion no-no to me is wearing flared pants with heels. Everlane’s skinny jeans are seriously the best. Pair It With Dark Denim

Dark denim always has a more dressed up look compared to light wash denim. They also look really good with high heels. So if you want to wear jeans at night, then black denim or dark jeans are the way to go. It definitely makes flannel more acceptable for a night out.

Go For A Flannel Dress

Layer With A Moto Jacket

Moto jackets are a great layering piece. If I want a more toned down yet dressed up look, I grab my suede moto jacket. But if I want an edgier look, I go for my faux leather jacket.
