How To Style A Tartan Plaid Blazer
Tis the season for plaid! Specifically, I’m talking about that tartan plaid print. Doesn’t it just scream the holidays?! It’s seriously one of my favorite prints to wear during this time of year. There are so many variations of it, that I can’t get enough of it.
One of my favorite ways to add plaid into the holiday season is wearing a tartan plaid blazer. Blazers in general are the best way to complete an outfit, create a cohesive outfit, and overall one of the best layering pieces to wear. You wear one, and you immediately look chic and well put-together. As you can see, I recently talked about velvet blazers. I’m on a blazer kick lately and can’t stop talking about them.
How To Style A Tartan Plaid Blazer
Keep The Outfit Simple
You don’t need to go crazy with your outfit. The tartan plaid blazer should be the final touch to your outfit. So if you just plan on wearing jeans and a sweater, so be it. The moment you put that blazer on, it already transforms your outfit into a holiday or Christmas outfit.
Find The Perfect Fit
There are so many different types of fit. There’s the fitted blazer, the oversized blazer, and the more tailored blazer. Depending on the vibe you are going for, the fit will matter. For instance, if you are heading some place that’s more sophisticated, then you might want a fitted and tailored blazer. If you want something more casual or trendy, then an oversized blazer is something you’d like to try.
You may also want to consider what you are wearing it with. For instance, if you plan on wearing a chunky sweater underneath, then I would recommend an oversized or boyfriend-fit blazer so that you can actually put it on. Or if everything you are wearing is very flowy then I would recommend a fitted blazer to keep the outfit balanced.
Find The Right Colors
There are so many variations and colors in tartan prints. You can have one where the color is predominately white, red, green, black, etc. Again, just keep your outfit in mind when you do pick the colors. That way they pair well together. Sometimes it is fun to find a tartan print with a non-Christmasy color. I love this pink and red tartan blazer. It still looks festive, but the touch of pink is so refreshing!

Here’s a couple of tartan plaid blazer outfits that hopefully will inspire you.
Skinny Jeans & Turtleneck
SHOP THE OUTFIT: Tartan Plaid Blazer | Maternity Skinny Jeans | Cashmere Turtleneck | Gold Hoop Earrings | Pointed-Toe Flats | Gold Monogram Necklace
My blazer fits true to size. I usually wear a size 4 and I’m currently wearing a size 4 and it fits perfectly. The only exception is that I can’t close the blazer with the buttons because of my growing bump.
I also want to talk about my maternity jeans since I know some of you are currently pregnant. Overall, these J.Crew maternity jeans are comfortable. I purchased my true size (size 27 pre-pregnancy) and I honestly wish I paid closer attention to the reviews. Most of the reviews mentioned to size down. While the size 27 still works, it does start to fall as the day goes by and I would occasionally have to pull it up. But that’s my only complaint about it.
Midi Skirt
SHOP THE OUTFIT: Tartan Plaid Blazer | Velvet Skirt | Puff-Sleeve Sweater| Gold Monogram Necklace | Cap-Toe Heels | Gold Hoop Earrings
This outfit is very similar to the skinny jeans outfit but I switched out the jeans for a velvet skirt. Again, I’m a big fan of wearing velvet during the holidays and this outfit creates a very festive look! This velvet skirt fits true to size and I’m wearing my pre-pregnancy size. Since it is an elastic waistband, it was able to accommodate the bump. I just had to wear it over my bell instead of the waist.

I have never been a tartan-gal. Long time ago I had purchased a dress but never got much wear out of it so gave up the whole idea, but you are making me re-think it. Love how you’ve styled it.

Thank you Alexa!
I love blazers, I feel like they have to be cut a certain way for women to look just right in them. I have a few I think I’ll dust off and give a second chance to.
I totally agree with you on cut! Thank you Shannon!
