My Maternity Jeans Review
Today is all about maternity jeans! So if you are an expecting mom or mama to be and thinking about purchasing maternity jeans, I hope my review is helpful. I tried on a total of 6 different jeans in different denim washes and brands. At the end of my review, I share which one was my ultimate favorite pair!
In all my photos, I am wearing the same shirt. I figured a consistent t-shirt would make it easier for you all to compare them. I am wearing the side ruched v-neck maternity t-shirt. It fits true to size, is comfortable, and I highly recommend it!
Maternity Jeans Review
Here are things to note when reading my maternity jeans review.
- True to size – in this context it means the size recommended to get is your pre-pregnancy size. So pre-pregnanacy, I was a size 27. When a pair of maternity jeans fits true to size, I also fit into a size 27 maternity jeans.
- Bump Fit – Is if they are worn over the bump or below the bump. Over the bump means that there is a band that stretches over your belly. Below the bump means that the jeans are fitted under the belly and typically have a stretch side panel to accommodate the bump.
J.Crew Maternity Skinny Jeans
These are my first pair of maternity jeans that I bought during my pregnancy. My sister-in-law recommended them to me.
SIZING: Fits true to size and ankle length (I’m 5’4″). The fit gets better later in the 3rd trimester.
BUMP FIT: Over the bump. However, the belly support will be loose fit earlier in your pregnancy.
REVIEW. This is definitely a budget-friendly maternity jeans option especially since J.Crew is constantly having promos. I will say if you get this pair earlier in your pregnancy, it will fit a bit loose and I originally thought I should have sized down. When I got to my 3rd trimester, they fit much better and I’m so glad I got it in my pre-pregnancy size. The over the belly support also fits much better. Overall, these are a great pair of jeans in your 3rd trimester. J.Crew Factory has a similar pair that is even more affordable.
Articles Of Society Secret Fit Belly Carly Crop Maternity Jeans
It’s probably hard to tell in the photo, but these are distressed maternity jeans. They’re distressed in the left knee and hem. It’s more subtle than most distressed jeans.
SIZING: Fits true to size.
BUMP FIT: Over the bump. The belly support is so comfortable!
REVIEW: These are ankle-length jeans and skinny fit. I love how they fit and overall are my favorite pair of maternity jeans. It’s also more budget-friendly because it is under $100. They’re $88 to be exact. These jeans are so comfortable and so soft and I highly recommend them. Plus, they’re affordable too!
J Brand Side Panel Mama J Super Skinny Maternity Jeans
SIZING: Fits true to size.
BUMP FIT: Below the bump. The belly support and band are side panels.
REVIEW: If you want a pair of maternity jeans that feel like denim, this is it. There’s still some stretch to it, but I would say the material is soft. It has more structure to it. It claims to be ankle-length, but it was more full length on me. I believe that’s how most of J Brand’s jeans have always fit me. But if you are taller than 5’4″, then you can expect them to be ankle length. At first, I was’t sure how I felt about below the bump jeans, but this pair convinced me they stay put and are still comfortable for the belly.
DL1961 Maternity Emma Distressed Skinny Jeans
Even though it says it is distressed, I would not categorize it as distressed jeans. There’s a very tiny distress where the pockets should be and frayed hem.
SIZING: Fits true to size.
BUMP FIT: Below the bump. There are side panels for belly support.
REVIEW: I love the denim wash of these jeans. They fit ankle-length on me. The denim is soft with the perfect amount of stretch to it. If you have worn DL1961 jeans before, then you know how good they are and I’m so pleased that their maternity jeans are just as good. They’re currently on sale. So if you want them, I highly recommend getting them asap because DL1961 are pricey jeans. However, you can rent them at Nuuly if you prefer. I rented them at first and I’m glad I did. Now I’m convinced they’re worth it!
7 For All Mankind Secret Fit Belly Ankle Skinny Maternity Jeans
This is a great option if you are looking for a classic black denim jeans.
SIZING: Fits true to size.
BUMP FIT: Over the bump. Really love the belly band!!
REVIEW: They’re supposed to be ankle-length, but they’re more full length on me. I’ve really wanted standard black denim maternity jeans and wished they had a true ankle length jeans. But otherwise, WOW. I’ve always been iffy about 7 For All Mankind jeans because they’re a hit or miss with me. However, the fit of these jeans did not disappoint. This specific type of jeans is part of their B(AIR) collection which means the fabric they use is EXTRA soft. And I can confirm that they are in fact really soft. There’s a lot of stretch to them but they never lost structure throughout the day.
Spanx Mama Ankle Jean-ish
These are jeggings instead of jeans. Hence, why they are called “jean-ish”.
SIZING: Fits true to size. I’m wearing a size small.
BUMP FIT: Over the bump.
REVIEW: As I mentioned, these are not true jeans. They’re what you call jeggings. They are a cross between leggings and jeans. However, I am SO impressed with them! First of all, they look like jeans so no one can ever tell you are not wearing jeans. There’s so much flexibility. What’s great is that of course it offers what Spanx is really good at… making your legs look flattering. If anything, these maternity pants have convinced me that I want the non-maternity “jean-ish” for later. They are seriously the best jeggings I’ve ever tried and seen.
Maternity Jeans Thoughts
I know wearing maternity jeans is short-lived. So I don’t expect you to buy as much as I do. In my opinion, you may only need two pairs max. But of course, it is up to you and it depends what your day to day is like. When we all are able to go out again and head back to the office, having several pairs might be helpful. But rule of thumb, it’s probably nice to have one pair of light denim and one pair of dark denim and maybe one pair of distressed maternity jeans.
Favorite Maternity Jeans
If I have to pick a favorite pair of maternity jeans it would be the Articles of Society Black Distressed Maternity Jeans and Spanx Mama Ankle Jean-ish. The J.Crew Skinny Maternity Jeans would have been in that list, but what set it back is that the belly band support didn’t fit as well until I was in my third trimester. But otherwise, I love the fit and color of the denim.
For all you mamas, do you have a favorite pair of maternity jeans?

Thank you Julia!
These all look and sound excellent. It is amazing how far maternity clothes have since our parents generation and our poor grandmothers what they had to wear. Great reviews!

my favorite maternity jeans were DL1961 and Madewell! I even had a pair of DL’s shorts since I delivered in the summer
Madewell was on my list! Maybe in my next pregnancy, I’ll give them a try.
