My Results From 14 Old Wives Tales To Predict Baby’s Gender
Since we are waiting to find out the gender of the baby, I thought it would be fun to share the results of old wives tales that predict gender. There’s absolutely no science behind it but it’s been fun seeing what each tale predicts.
I honestly never thought I’d be someone who would be patient enough to wait for our baby’s gender. Patience is not something most people associate me with haha. But I think it has to do with the fact that I’m just so happy we’re having a baby that the gender really doesn’t matter to us. We know the baby will be loved no matter what.
It’s been really fun hearing what other people think we’re having. Some are so adamant that we have a girl or a boy. Whenever I asked why, the answer ranges from how I’m carrying, my skin, their dream about me (haha!), or it’s just what came to mind when we shared the baby news.
Another reason why I wanted to wait for the gender is because I really just want to focus on limiting my baby purchases and only getting what we truly need. I know I tend to overbuy and I didn’t want to go overboard before our Sweet Pea arrives. Planning a gender neutral nursery room has been a lot of fun. I got really creative and love how it turned out! Here is a glimpse of our gender neutral nursery. I pretty much have bought everything listed and the room is 90% done. We have some final touches and I’ll add more personality to it when the baby arrives.

Carrying high is girl. Carrying low is boy.
I’m carrying high. Girl.
Do you have pregnancy acne or skin blemishes? Old wives tale claims a girl will steal your beauty.
This is hard to tell. In the beginning, I was definitely breaking out a lot. Now my blemishes have gotten better but there’s still a few spots and my skin is really dry. I don’t know. I guess girl
Have you noticed a change in your body temperature? If you’re feeling cold, it is a boy. If you’re feeling hot and sweaty, it’s a girl.
Well, I’m always cold no matter what and my body temperature hasn’t changed. I’m still cold. So does this mean boy?
If the baby’s heart rate is over 140pbm, it’s a girl. Under 140 bpm is a boy.
At first, baby’s heart rate was 165 bpm. It’s now slowed down to 144 bpm. So I guess girl.
Do you have any significant cravings? If you’re craving sweet things, it’s a girl. If you’re craving salty or sour foods, it is a boy.
I don’t really have any cravings. But if I have to choose sweet versus salty at this moment, I’ll go for the sweet. So I guess girl.

In both ancient Chinese and Mayan culture if your age and the year you conceived are even, you’re having a girl. If they’re both odd, you’re having a boy. If one is even and one is odd, you’re having a boy.
I’m 32 and conceived in 2020. Looks like we’re having a girl.
Are you having morning sickness? The morning sickness means a girl.
Oh yea I definitely had morning sickness and it was awful. This is a girl.
Take the Ring Test – tie your wedding ring (we used my husband’s ring) to a string. If it swings in a circle, it’s a girl. If it swings back and forth, it’s a boy.
Ours swung in a circle. Girl.
Did your husband gain sympathy weight? If your husband put on some weight, the old wives tale states you have a girl.
Tre has not gained any weight. So this one is a boy.
Are you experiencing swollen ankles or legs? If so, it’s a boy.
So far I’m not experiencing any swollen ankles or legs. This one is a girl.
Have you experienced frequent headaches? If so, you’re having a boy.
Definitely been having a lot of headaches. Guess I have a boy.
How’s your mood? Happy and mellow means a boy. Moody means girl.
Haha I’m for sure moody. Girl.
What’s the shape of your bump? Carrying all the weight in the front like a basketball, it is a boy. If you’re carrying the weight all over, it is a girl.
For sure looks like someone stuffed a basketball in me. So this one is a boy.
Are you clumsier than usual? If you’re clumsy, it’s a boy. If you’re graceful, it’s a girl.
I’d say I’m the same and Tre agrees. So I guess I’ll put girl for this one.

According to all these Old Wives Tales, it might be a girl? Haha but who really knows? I know people who experienced the opposite of some of these old wives tales, and the gender ends up the complete opposite. But this was a lot of fun to do! For all the mamas, how accurate was it for you?
If you want to follow my pregnancy, I created a Motherhood section on the blog. I also shared what my first trimester and second trimester was like for me.
Can’t believe our baby will be here before we know it! What do you think? Do we have a boy or girl?

Theses old wives tales are really funny !
If one day I get pregnant I also won’t want to know the sex.
I think this is really fun to keep it as a surprise.

You’re not the only one that thinks this haha!
You look so beautiful in that maternity dress!
Thank you!
This is such a fun post Rach! I tried my hardest to play along too when my friends did some of this test on me. I didn’t want to be biased and it was hard not to “listen” to the noise. I do know that one thing that changed for me is that I love anything crunchy and salty but when I was preggo, I want everything sweet. People were for sure, it would be a girl. I have a beautiful baby boy! I can’t wait to meet your little bundle. So so excited for you and Tre!

Haha I try really hard not to be biased either. As long as there a healthy baby, that’s all that matters. Thank you so much Maureen!
Sounds like you’re having a girl 😉 I loved reading through all of these predictions. That’s so much fun! I can’t wait to learn what the gender actually is (though I actually might agree with these old wives tales. I think it’s a girl hehe)
I know I can’t wait to see if it’s true!
These are always super fun to do then find out after! I say girl because of the way you’re carrying but it’s alway up in the air! I feel like I carried all my babies the same and had all the same symptoms and I have 1 girl and 2 boys!
Xo, Steph
No way! It’s so funny how some people have come up with these.
This must’ve been a fun project to do…I’m thinking it’s a girl! xoxo, Sarah
Definitely was fun!
Haha! Me and my friend have done the ring one before!

Oh my goodness, these old wives tales are fun to hear! I’m only a cat mom right now, so I haven’t heard a lot of these, haha. It sounds like all signs are pointing to a girl!
Make Life Marvelous
Haha they are fun to hear!
I can remember my Mother and Aunts doing the ring test on someone and I was very young around six or seven. I did carry my daughter high. My sister didn’t believe my husband when he called her and told her when we had our son lol, boys are rare in our family! When I was pregnant we didn’t have the choice to find out the sex, we never had ultrasounds unless they thought there was a problem so really both my children were a surprise. This wasn’t a long time ago, my daughter is 40 and my son is 35.
My MIL said the same thing about the ring test. It’s definitely a popular test!Aw thanks for sharing this story for me. Makes me even more excited to meet our little one!
Very funny old wives tales 😀
