5 Ways To Style A Slip Dress
In the past couple of years, the slip dress (and even a slip skirt) has been trending. A slip dress is usually a midi or maxi length dress with a straight cut. Most of them are a spaghetti strap dress but occasionally you will come across one that has thicker straps.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I could get behind it. I was worried I would look like I’m wearing an elegant nightie. However, through time they started to grow on me. And that’s because I took a closer look at them and noticed they are made differently from an underslip and nightie. So I tried a few on, and loved it! I also love that it is sooo versatile due to the shape and cut of the slip dress. And you know me, I love any article of clothing that is versatile!
How To Style A Slip Dress
What Is A Slip Dress?
Basically a slip dress is a dress that almost resembles a women’s petticoat or underslip. However, these can be worn in public instead of an undergarment. Most of them are silk slip dresses or satin slip dresses. However, I’ve come across a few made with soft-weave fabric like the Japanese GoWeave Slip Dress from Everlane.
Different Slip Dress Styles
Aside from the fabric, there are so many different slip dress styles. Things to consider are the neckline, fit, length, solid-colored or prints. The most common lengths are midi and maxi length. I actually prefer midi length because I noticed I get a lot of wear with it. Maxi lengths tend to have that special occasion kind of look. But not all. Also the cowl neck neckline is best if you want to have a dressier slip dress (which you will see below).
If you are still iffy with slip dresses, I recommend started out with a printed one. That what I did and what got me really into them. They don’t have that undergarment / nightie kind of look to it.
When To Wear A Slip Dress
- To A Wedding
- Date Night
- While Traveling
- Casual Weekend Look
- Running Errands
As I mentioned before, they are more versatile than you think. You can pretty much wear and style a slip dress for every season and for all occasions as long as you style it right. You’ll notice that it’s all about the accessories and shoes as they make the biggest impact.
5 Ways To Style A Slip Dress
Wedding Guest Outfit (Wear As Is )
Satin Slip Dress | Strappy Heels (these heels are very comfortable – fits true to size) | c/o Statement Earrings |
When I say wear as is, I mean not too many accessories or layering done to it. By doing this, you can easily create an elegant outfit. I am wearing a satin slip dress with a cowl neck as a Summer wedding guest dress. All you have to do is pair it with statement earrings and strappy heels.
Layer With A Blazer
White Blazer | Polka Dot Slip Dress |Strappy Sandals | Straw Bucketbag
This is another simple way to wear a slip dress. Just put a blazer on over it and it easily can transform. Wearing a blazer over it can be work appropriate or a great date night outfit. I wore this exact outfit in Venice, Italy as a date night look. I went a little casual by wearing strappy sandals. But this goes to show how easy it is to travel with a slip dress.
Wear With A Chunky Sweater
Satin Slip Dress | Chunky Knit Sweater | Block Heels
To completely transform a slip dress, wear an oversized sweater over it. This is one of my favorite ways to wear it because now the slip dress looks like a skirt. The trick to keep the sweater put is to wear a skinny belt around the waist and over the sweater and adjust the sweater accordingly. I also share outfit ideas on multiple ways to style a sweater.
Layer Underneath
Thin Turtleneck | Polka Dot Slip Dress | Pointed Toe Slingback Flats | Straw Bucket Bag
This is a great look when you are in-between seasons. It’s a great transitional outfit. If you are layering underneath the slip dress, I recommend wearing a tee that is fitted and thin. Otherwise, the layering will not work. You don’t have to use a turtleneck. Depending on the neckline, you can wear a t-shirt or long-sleeve.
Put A Jean Jacket On
Jean Jacket | GoWeave Slip Dress (true to size) | Round Sunglasses | Heeled Sandals (so comfortable!) | Gold Monogram Necklace |
When all else fails, you can always trust a jean jacket. Just put it on and it’s a great dressy casual outfit. This is a great Spring transitional outfit. If you want to create a completely casual outfit, I suggest switching out the heels with white sneakers. Some people give it a more edgy casual look by wearing combat boots. I really love how this slip dress & combat boots outfit looks.
This woven fabric one is probably my favorite slip dress because this one has the most casual style. So I can wear this one more often. I also love the fabric because it is thick and has structure but very cooling and soft.
