Book Of The Month Review
For about a year and a half now (started in June 2019), I’ve been sharing every month the books I’ve read. I’ve always loved reading and I am so glad I picked it back up. It’s so fun how a book can take you to other places without having to leave your home and just get completely lost and immersed into the story.
One way I’ve been able to actively read as much as I have and find a lot of great books is through Book Of The Month (BOTM). I discovered Book Of The Month a little over a year ago through an Instagram Ad. Seriously though, ads know how to target me haha. It sounded interesting and I was impressed with their book selections that I decided to try it out and subscribe to it. Plus, the cost was very minimal and the cancellation policy was very easy. I’ll share more on that in a bit.
Book Of The Month Review
What is Book Of The Month?
Ok, if you are confused what I’m talking about let me break down what the Book Of the Month subscription is. The Book Of The Month club actually started almost 90 years ago. So it has been around for awhile. There is a panel that curates five hardcover books to its members monthly. These books are known to be wow-worthy reads. In 2015 it re-launched and modernized the Book Of The Month. It followed its club’s original concept, but with a more modernized approach. And it took social media by storm.
Now Book Of The Month is a book subscription and each month’s selections are curated by their editorial team. All the books are hardcover and they also include newly released books that have not been out to the public yet. The membership cost is $5/month and each book costs $9.99. That $14.99 monthly cost includes one book of that month’s selections and you have up to 3 books to choose from. Each additional book is $9.99, also known as add-ons. Not bad for hardcover books right? Much more affordable than Amazon! Plus, shipping is FREE!
How Does Book Of The Month Work?
How To Join
It is so easy to subscribe. Just go to Book Of The Month’s website (bookofthemonth.com) and click on the ‘Join Now’ button. Then follow the instructions to input your personal information. They usually have new promo deals for new members, so definitely look out for those promos. It should be on the top header of the website.

Monthly Cost
At minimum, the book subscription is $14.99 a month with free shipping. It’s $5 and each book cost $9.99. Every book is a hardcover book. You only select from that month’s selections and there are five to choose from. If you want to purchase additional books, that is an additional $9.99 per book. This is called ‘Add-Ons’. Your Add-Ons can be from previous months’ selections or if you like another book from the current month’s selections. You are only allowed to have a maximum of two Add-Ons per month which means you can only get a total of three books in your monthly box.
When To Expect Your Books
Your subscription includes the shipping cost therefore every monthly box has free shipping. Shipping typically takes 5-7 business days.
How To Skip A Month
If you don’t like the book selections of a particular month, you can skip that month and you will not be charged or your monthly cost will carry over to the following month. All you have to do is click the ‘Skip The Month’ button at the bottom of the page.
How To Cancel
If you no longer want to be part of Book Of The Month, cancelling is easy. Just go to ‘My Account’ and then ‘Membership’. That’s where you’ll find the cancellation button. Super easy!
How Can You Learn More About The Book Of The Month Selections?
I personally think you all should learn more and read the synopsis before selecting your book. You click onto the book you are interested in and scroll down and you’ll see the book’s synopsis and other authors’ reviews on the book.
How To Save A List of Additional Books You Want To Read
If you are like me and love to read, there is a way to save other books so you can add them as Add-Ons in the future if you have met your maximum of three books for the month. When you click onto a book you are interested in, there is a flag/button on the bottom right of the book. Click on it and it will be added to your ‘To Be Read‘ list. On the top header, there is a ‘To Be Read‘ section and that’s where you will see all the books you saved.
Is there a book club?
There is a way to join and create a Book Of The Month club with your friends. Click on ‘Bookclubs‘ and it will direct you to start one!
Is Book Of the Month Worth It

Now that I have broken down what BOTM is, I’ll share my honest review on it. Overall, I think it is worth it especially if you love subscription boxes but don’t want the books to be a surprise. You get to pick the book and have the option to skip the month.
Pros
I love Book Of The Month and that’s where I get the majority of my books. They almost always have an amazing selection of books and I think it’s so cool that I am receiving some newly released books before they available to the public.
I love that they’re all hardcover books and are relatively affordable. They’re $9.99 each. If you look at places like Amazon, they can be close to or more than $20. Just pick any book from BOTM and compare on Amazon. You’ll see what I’m talking about. I’ve saved so much money buying physical books this way. If you remove the cover of the books, I really love the aesthetics of the binding. Very regal. So I feel like I’m getting more for my buck.
I also don’t feel so committed. There was maybe only one month where I didn’t care for that month’s selection. So I just skipped the month. No additional cost and it was easy to do.

Cons
There are some downsides to Book Of The Month. One is you can only get a maximum of three books a month. I personally read more than three books a month and would love the option to get more. So I just have a hard time narrowing it down and my To Be Read list keeps growing.
So in order for BOTM to work, your first book HAS to be from that month’s selection. Like I said, there a few instances where I didn’t care for that month’s selection and had to skip the month. I wish my BOTM could be from previous months. Otherwise, if you don’t like anything from that month, you can’t even select ‘Add-Ons’.
But now you know my secret and how I’m able to afford so many hardcover books. It’s seriously my favorite subscription box.

That’s so neat! I’ve never heard of this before, but I think it would be pretty great. I love that you can skip a month if you don’t find a book you think you would like.
Make Life Marvelous
The skip a month without any penalty is great! I think I have only skipped once or twice but I like knowing I will not get charged if I’m not interested in that month.
I have been wanting to try out this service forever! I think it sounds so cool and is such a great idea! Xx.
I really enjoyed it!
I actually tried this book of the month subscription for a bit last year, and I loved it! I also found it after seeing it on instagram haha

I know a lot of people who love using BOTM! I’ve never personally signed up because the book options aren’t as frequently my cup of tea, but I do think it’s a really affordable and creative way to enjoy getting new books! I’m glad you’ve benefitted from it over the years!
I personally love it! I’m so surprised bc a lot of the books you talk about are part of BOTM.
