How To Dress For Fall When It’s Still Hot
At the start of Fall, the weather is not that cold and sometimes it still feels like Summer. Sometimes there are days when in the morning where it’s dewy and the air is crisp is cooler, and as you move through the day the sun’s heat gets stronger and stronger. As soon as the sun sets, the temperature drops again. Or the weather fluctuates day to day. For instance, in Chicago we recently had 80 degrees and the next day it was 50 degrees. Overall, Fall weather has the up and down patterns. So I want to share ways to dress for the season. I want you to be able to dress like Fall but still adapt to the warmer days.
How To Dress For Fall When It’s Still Hot
Summer Clothes In Fall Hues
You can still wear that short-sleeve dress, skirt, or tank top. But switch up the color palette to warmer hues that are more appropriate for Falls. You want to go for the color rust, olive green, beige, tan, cream, black, mauve, or other mooted colors. Anything that is vibrant or pastel is too Summery.
Investing In Lightweight Layers
Keep your layers light! You should wear something that you can easily layer over. If you are wearing a tank top or sleeveless dress, just put a jean jacket over it when it gets cooler. Or you can pick a button shirt or blouse that is light on the skin. I’m a fan of wearing Everlane’s silk tops (how cute is this silk puff-sleeve shirt and they all come ins Fall colors), they’re great for Fall outfits yet you stay cool.
Switch From Sandals To Flats
It’s probably too warm to wear boots. Although, I’m sure you are anxious to start wearing boots! But wearing sandals looks way to summery. However, wearing flats perfect. They’re great for the summer to fall outfit. The best transitional flats are the slingback d’orsay flats. But any flats will do. They also pair well with some of your Summer clothes.
Wear Maxi Dresses
If you love wearing dresses as much as I do, you don’t need to give them up just yet. I pretty much wearing dresses all year. But wearing maxi dresses or maxi-length skirts is more appropriate for Fall fashions. Anthropologie has an amazing selection of dresses for Fall. That’s where I typically get my Fall dresses.
Use Fall Accessories
Another great way to dress for Fall during a warm weather day is add your favorite Fall accessories or prints. Fall is the time of year when I like to add leopard print to my outfit. So if you are planning to wear a belt, grab a leopard print belt. Switch out your straw bag to a brown crossbody bag.
Beginning Of Fall Outfits
Here are some outfits that feature fall colors but are great for warm weather. Most of the outfits I will feature can pretty much be worn in any occasion from walk in the park to out to dinner.
Add A Jean Jacket
Oversized Jean Jacket | GoWeave Slip Dress | Round Sunglasses | Heeled Sandals | Gold Monogram Necklace
This outfit is a spaghetti strapped maxi dress. This particular maxi dress is thicker so you can easily wear it into Fall. But it was a warmer day, I just put on an oversized jean jacket.
Add A Blazer
Boyfriend Blazer | Satin Slip Dress | Leather Sandals | Bucket Bag | Gold Monogram Necklace
If you want something a little more dressed up than a jean jacket, I highly recommend layering with a blazer. It’s a great layering pieces that can always elevate your outfit.
Pleated Dress
Pleated Dress | Block Heels, but these mules are amazing too | Top Handle Bag | Gold Monogram Necklace
This type of dress can easily be a Summer dress, however, I selected one that has a golden hue to it. That way it has a more fall color to it. Want to dress it down? Just wear loafers or slip-on sneakers!
Add Suede
Floral Print Top | Suede Skirt | Slingback Flats | Round Bag | Gold Monogram Necklace
Suede is one of the fabrics I associate Fall fashion with. While the weather is still warm for skirts, wearing a skirt with suede gives that fall vibe to it. Also, my top is sheer so it is great for Summer but wearing one with navy & camel colored prints again gives a Fall look.
Long-sleeve Maxi Dress
Long-Sleeve Maxi Dress | Bucket Bag | Gold Monogram Necklace | Leather Sandals
As I mentioned earlier, wear a maxi dress and you’re good to go. This long-sleeve dress was perfect to wear because it kept me warm during the crisp morning, but it also didn’t heat me up when the temperature started rising during the day.
Layer Underneath
Satin Slip Dress | Slingback Flats | Tissue Turtleneck | Bucket Bag
Another great way to layer with dresses it wearing a thin long-sleeve underneath. This type of look is perfect when you get decide if the temperature is too warm for jackets but it is too cool to not wear a layer. It’s great for those odd Fall days.

Whoa! That is nuts!
I find it so difficult to style a light jacket … I am unsure why but it’s like I find it almost impossible!
Love that you partner a denim jacket and a blazer with them … I have to say, since I purchased my blazer, it really has become a wardrobe staple … I genuinely have no idea what I did without it now!

Light jackets may not be for everyone and that is totally okay!
