Velvet is so fun to wear during the holidays. Almost always, I include something made out of velvet in my holiday and/or Christmas outfits. Something about the texture and the appearance of velvet gives it that extra holiday glam. You can wear the most basic piece and it immediately transforms your outfit.
Not everyone loves to wear sequins. Wearing velvet is a great alternative to sequins. Or if you love both, wearing sequins and velvet always looks great together. In fact, I am doing that in this outfit by wearing a velvet blazer and sequined top together. Want something more feminine, then check out this outfit. I combined a sequined floral top and velvet skirt.
How to Style Velvet Blazer
Wearing Velvet For The Holidays
Like I said, velvet is PERFECT for the holidays. So the perfect time to style a velvet blazer is during the holiday season. It velvet adds holiday glam, especially if you are going to holiday parties, pair it with plaid or Christmas colors. Back in the day, a velvet jacket used to be only associated with black tie events, and you would only see men wear it as a tuxedo jacket with a bow tie. Time as changed and love that it can perfect for women too!
In this outfit, I paired it with my wide-leg plaid pants. There are specks of green in it which gives it a Christmasy feel. I also love styling velvet with something shiny. So pick out a statement jewelry piece or maybe some dainty gold jewelry. In this outfit, I went with my classic gold monogram necklace (btw, this necklace would make an incredible gift!). For my velvet jumpsuit, I wore statement earrings.
Wearing Black
You can never go wrong with wearing black. Black especially looks luxurious with velvet. Wearing black with velvet helps tie your outfit together. You may have different textures and patterns going on, but that hint of black (or you can go all black too!), keeps everything cohesive. For me, I decided to wear black ankle boots and a black sequined top. I also think wearing deep purples can give it a classic yet fashion-forward look.
If I had time, this style velvet blazer would look incredible with black skinny jeans or black leather pants (faux leather). And if you are wearing a colorful velvet blazer, it would look incredible with a black shirt. If you are wearing colorful pants (perhaps sequined pants), go with a classic black velvet blazer .
Wearing It As A Layering Piece
Keep it simple and use a velvet blazer as a layering piece. If you are gravitating towards a cardigan, how about replacing it with a velvet blazer? Or if you are wearing a dress, just put a blazer over it! Maybe you want to elevate your classic white shirt, just put a blazer over it. Another great alternative to a white shirt is this white poplin top I recently purchased. It’s an effortless top to layer with with subtle statement details. So easy to do and it makes a big impact on your outfit! I’m currently eyeing this pink blazer or this blue velvet one. It would make an easy transition from the holidays to Spring!
Keep It Casual
Sometimes, you just want a casual outfit with your blazer. You can do that too with a velvet blazer. My style tip is to wear a pair of light wash jeans (I prefer ankle length jeans), classic pointed-toe flats or Chelsea boots (I own this pair and I love it!), and a basic t-shirt. Simple yet chic.
Stylish Velvet Blazer
I’m obsessed with my blazer from Universal Standard. If you are not familiar with Universal Standard, they are the most size inclusive brand out there. They have 40 different sizes. I go into detail about them in this post. Their sizing metrics are different than most brands because they want the size to truly reflect most women’s sizes. Unfortunately, it is not available this year for some reason. However, this J.Crew blazer has a similar look and fit and actually much more affordable than Universal Standard.
Below are some amazing stylish velvet blazers that will immediately elevate your outfit.
My blazer is the most comfortable blazer I own. It doesn’t feel tight around the arms and armpit. In fact, I can freely move them around. It’s so flattering and comes in gold and black as well. I’m wearing a size 3XS (size 2). So it does fit true to size.
Velvet Blazer Outfits
Here are other outfits I created with the velvet blazer.
With A Sweater Dress
This is one of my favorite maternity dresses! It’s from Pink Blush Maternity (gifted) and they have a lot of cute and flattering maternity clothes at affordable prices. I got my pre-pregnancy size and fits well and can still accommodate my growing bump!

With A Pleated Skirt
Why not pair it with a pleated skirt. I wore my pink metallic skirt to switch up the usual holiday colors. Funny story is that I could not zip up my skirt. I swear this bump is growing way faster than I expected haha. Anyways, it is zipped-up half way and luckily it can still hold up. That’s when I decided to layer with a blazer :).
